Friday Faves, Florida edition: HaHaHaHa!

There’s really not much to add to this. I just found it highly amusing, given that our state is more than 20 million strong and growing by the day. We’ve come a long way since 1821.

I suppose more people like living in hell than Mr. Randolph realized. 🙂

To be fair, I have to wonder whether the good Congressman’s views might have changed if he’d known that air conditioning and pesticides would make a lot of places habitable that were previously a bit rough on man and beast. And I wonder what he’d have thought about Minnesota, on the flip side.

AC was definitely a game changer, but you and I both know that people were settling both FL well before air conditioning. Which means both Randolph sorely underestimated what people were willing to put up with in exchange for land, new frontiers, the ability to conquer and forge a new trail.

In many ways the settling of Florida reads a lot like the settling of the west. Dangerous, risky business on a wild terrain.

True–I seem to remember my gracious hostess writing about the relative miracle that was her hometown growing up for that very reason. I also know from personal experience that it can be tolerable even futher into the tropical zones–had a great time in Malaysia in 2003. Warm, but great.

Side note; two of my kids are in Puerto Rico right now enjoying the nice cool 95 degree breezes there. I was happy to see a picture that told me that my son was benefiting from my refusal to start the AC the minute the mercury hit 75. :^) (i.e. he wasn’t sweating to death) One week mission to help eliminate some remanent hurricane damage.

Maybe I’ll send them to Death Valley next August to see how tough they really are. I once drove through there when it was 114 in the shade, no AC. Even stopped to give some people some water–they were doing the California thing and driving to Lake Powell towing a boat with the AC on, evidently did not figure out their tow vehicle’s cooling was not that good. Oopsie.
